Rather than settling for back-breaking work in local citrus groves, they forged a living with their art.Īn exhibition currently displayed at the Orlando Museum of Art explores the work of the Florida Highwaymen. Shut out of museums and art galleries, they asserted their economic independence before and after segregation. ![]() ![]() Working in the Fort Pierce area, the artists became known as the Highwaymen. During a time when Black artists were generally focused on figuration and the best way to express themselves in the wake of Jim Crow and the fight for civil rights, they painted windblown palm trees, reflective coastal waters, grassy marshes, crashing ocean waves, and tropical sunsets. BEGINNING IN THE LATE 1950s, a group of mostly self-taught African American artists devoted themselves to capturing Florida’s natural landscapes. ![]()

![]() ![]() But is willpower prewired, or can it be taught? Walter Mischel’s now iconic 'marshmallow test,' one of the most famous experiments in the history of psychology, proved that the ability to delay gratification is critical to living a successful and fulfilling life: self-control not only predicts higher marks in school, better social and cognitive functioning, and a greater sense of self-worth it also helps us manage stress, pursue goals more effectively, and cope with painful emotions. ![]() ![]() What will she do? And what are the implications for her behaviour later in life? A child is presented with a marshmallow and given a choice: Eat this one now, or wait and enjoy two later. ![]() ![]() ![]() What happened to the rest of the family? Why does Robert never get a reply to the letters he sends home to his brothers and sisters? We’ll have to wait until later in the book for these questions to be answered, but in the meantime we read about Robert’s work with the plant collector William Lobb, gathering seeds and plants to sell to gardeners in England. ![]() Time passes and we jump forward to the 1850s where the youngest Goodenough son, Robert, has made his way alone to California. ![]() Finding solace in the strong cider and applejack produced from the fruits of the orchard, Sadie’s is a miserable existence from which there seems to be no escape. Sadie, who does not share her husband’s ambition, longs to move on and start again somewhere else – somewhere more comfortable and welcoming. With the help of their five children, James is working hard to establish an orchard with enough apple trees to satisfy the requirements to legally claim their piece of land. The story begins in 1838 in the Black Swamp of Ohio, where James and Sadie Goodenough are attempting to make a living from the harsh, inhospitable earth on which they have settled. ![]() It’s been some time since I last read a Tracy Chevalier novel, but having enjoyed some of her books in the past, I was pleased to have the opportunity to read her latest one, At the Edge of the Orchard. ![]() 6/12/2023 0 Comments Sort of Sisters by Stacie Johnson![]() ![]() ![]() Some parts are even genuinely funny, and it's a positive read overall. Still, even given the '90s setting and YA trends back then, this short novel isn't quite as corny as I thought it might be. The characters' actions and reactions didn't always seem to mesh right away either. It's easy to read, of course, but for lack of a better way to put it, I couldn't tell at first exactly where certain details and comments were coming from, and then they wouldn't feel spot-on when they landed. I found this story to be fairly interesting, though I couldn't get the best grip on the writing style. It's clearly the type of book that would be "coolest" for preteen kids to read while they'd still only be imagining what high school would be like. The other day, when I saw a book description calling 18 Pine St., a series created by Walter Dean Myers, "the first major young adult series to focus on multicultural characters," I was curious to see if "multicultural" would be a code word for "Black." As I got into this first book, I did indeed find the core gang of friends to be multicultural, matching the back cover picture. ![]() I'm pretty sure someone I know used to read copies from the library. Wow! I vaguely remember seeing books from this '90s YA series back in the day. ![]() 6/11/2023 0 Comments Screenwriting book cat![]() ![]() This screenplay book has one standout benefit - it makes you look like a professional on the page. ![]() ![]() I still have it on my desk today and use it any time I have a question. A quick flip to the index will show you how to format a phone call, denote a montage, or even use “dual dialogue” to show two characters arguing. Well, what do you do when you have a question about how to format something on the page? The greatest feeling in the world is hitting a stride while writing. It is considered required reading for anyone who wants to learn the nuts and bolts of how to write a screenplay. It's the very first book I bought when I took my first film class in college. This book by Christopher Riley is a “must have” for every screenwriter. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() But the worldbuilding is continually undercut by clunky colloquialisms such phrases as "Well, that's completely creepy" and "It's okay" yank readers out of this carefully constructed, mostly preindustrial world. ![]() While Alina's training borrows familiar tropes (outlander combat teacher, wizened-crone magic instructor, friends and enemies among her peers), readers will nevertheless cheer her progress. Bardugo allows the details of Grisha magic to unfold with limited exposition, using Alina's ignorance for readers' benefit. The charismatic, quartz-eyed Darkling takes her to the palace to learn the art of the Etherealki, and Mal is left behind. An attack by the terrifying volcra brings forth a power Alina never knew she had: She is a Sun Summoner. They are escorting the Darkling, the most powerful Grisha in the land, across the terrifying Shadow Fold that divides Ravka’s heart from its coast. Years later, they are in the army, Alina in the cartographer corps and Mal a tracker. When the Grisha came to test inseparable friends Alina and Malyen, neither showed any aptitude for the Small Science. Gray’s art of course adorns his follow-up to Lanark, 1984’s 1982, Janine, a challenging novel of debauchery. Gray was trained as a muralist, and if I ever make it to Glasgow I plan to see his murals. Lanark included original artwork by Gray, a trend that would continue over the course of his career as a novelist. Part dystopian fantasy, part realist autofiction, part Kafkaesque anti-quest, and part Künstlerroman, Lanark deconstructs the traditional novel, braiding multiple narratives into a complex, sharp, satirical epic. ![]() ![]() ![]() Gray’s first novel, 1981’s Lanark, is one of the strangest and most memorable novels I’ve ever read.
